I was contracting regularly starting at 36 weeks and I was 1 cm and 50% effaced. At midnight at 38+2 weeks I woke up with incredibly painful contractions... With my first baby I was dilated 1cm from weeks 36-38 each time I was checked and dilated to 3.5cm at 39 weeks. I went for the strep b and cervix check today and was 3cm and 50 percent ...38 weeks, 5cm dilated, sent home AGAIN. The day before yesterday I had a doc app, was checked and told I was at 1cm. Well yesterday at 1am I woke up with horrible contractions, went to er, and was told I was at a 3. After an hour of walking, dilated to a 4. Was told to walk again for two hours, so I did.

This is normally based on how close you are to your due date — being 1 cm dilated at 28 weeks is very different than being 1 cm dilated at 40 weeks. Either way, if your provider says that you are 1-cm dilated it is definitely time to start to prepare for labor.
